Honor God’s Word

Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored.
2 Thessalonians 3:1

There was a time when the Bible was used in every classroom in America – whether it was a public school or a private school.

Then it wasn’t. And still isn’t.

There was a time when every school – whether public or private – began the day with a prayer.

Then it wasn’t. And still isn’t.

It is a fact today that the Word of God is not honored as inspired and inerrant.

It is not honored outside of the Church like it used to be.

It is even not honored in some Christian churches – whose official teaching goes something like this, “The Bible contains the Word of God” which implies that some of it is not the Word of God.

While it would be nice if God’s Word and prayer could be restored to the standing it held in our public schools, I seriously wonder if this would be beneficial to us in the United States. After all, I do not want public school teachers teaching God’s Word if they have not themselves learned God’s Word and have not been trained in God’s Word.

Instead of restoring it to our public schools, instead I advocate that we take St. Paul’s admonishment and request of 2 Thessalonians 3:1 and apply it to our personal lives and our homes!

Let us, as fathers and mothers, restore the honor of God’s Word to our homes and our families.

That will be my prayer. That the head of the household will take the lead each day and read the Word of God out loud to his (or her) family. Then they can have a devotion about that Word of God, talk about it, ask questions, and then pray together.

If we restore this practice to our families, it was begin to permeate back into our culture and our country.

And this will be the most powerful way of proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ to our world!

The message that Jesus Christ was born to take our place under God’s Law, lived a perfect life to give us his righteousness by faith, died on the cross to forgive all our sin, rose from the grave to give us the promise that we who have faith in him will rise from the grave one day, and ascended into heaven with the sure and certain hope that he will return to take all believers in him to paradise – this Gospel message starts in our homes and with our devotion to God’s Word.

This is my prayer – and I ask you to pray it as well. As God powerfully answers this prayer, the Gospel will speed throughout the world and more and more people will turn away from sin and be turned to God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
